Brooklyn NY

The song says that New York, NY is a wonderful town since the Bronx is up and the battery is down. The same song also says that people ride in a hole in the ground. When they ride in that hole in the ground many of them are heading for Brooklyn, New York. More people live in Brooklyn, NY than in any of the other boroughs. Today almost 2.5 million people live in Brooklyn and that translates into a population density of almost 35,000 people per square mile. In fact Manhattan is the only county in the country that has a higher population density.

Brooklyn, New York is on the western end of Long Island and is named for the Dutch city of Breukelen. Since 1898 it has been one of the five boroughs that make up New York City. The famous Brooklyn Bridge connects Brooklyn to "the city," which is what people in the other boroughs and on Long Island call Manhattan. There are also numerous tunnels for cars and the subway.

Brooklyn, NY was founded by the Dutch in 1634 and was lost to the British in 1664. The British named the county Kings County and Brooklyn was one of the six towns in the county. Brooklyn, New York was the site of the first major battle after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. In 1854 Brooklyn started to annex the other towns in the county and in 1896 all of Kings County was called Brooklyn, NY.

On the south coast of Brooklyn, New York is Brighton Beach, Manhattan Beach and the most famous of all Coney Island. Coney Island is the home of the Cyclone rollercoaster. It was built in 1927 and is still in use today. One other ride, The Wonder Wheel, which was built in 1920, is also currently in use. If you are in Brooklyn, NY you must stop by Nathan's Hot Dog Stand at Coney Island. They are the best. I grew up in Brooklyn and have fond memories of 1954. In that year the Brooklyn Dodgers at last beat the Yankees and won the World Series. That was the year that the song should have been changed to Brooklyn, NY it's a wonderful town.
